Vox SALT

From Doorstep Conversations to County-Wide Change

A knock on a door rarely feels like the start of county-wide change. Yet across Hola Mission in Tana River’s Galole Sub-County, simple conversations taking place in homes and along village paths are uncovering something remarkable: communities already possess many of the solutions they need.

Through the SALT approach (Strengths, Appreciation, Listening and Teamwork), community facilitators are listening to residents, identifying local strengths, and shining a light on the people who are already making a difference. And when those stories are carried beyond the village by Vox Radio and through its social media outlets, they begin to inspire and influence communities across Tana River County.

One example is “Nyumba Kumi”, which in Swahili means “ten households”.  It’s a community-based system, where neighbours work together to promote safety, support one another and share information with local leaders. As Assistant Chief Evaline Babwoya explains, community security starts with knowing your neighbours and addressing concerns before they become crises.

But what if these local stories didn’t stop at the front door?

Vox Radio Multiplies Impact

SALT discovers local strengths. Vox Radio multiplies their impact.

A home visit may change one household. Shared through radio broadcasts, social media and digital storytelling, that same insight can spark conversations, strengthen communities and inspire change across an entire county.

By sharing stories from SALT visits, Vox Radio takes local solutions and puts them into the public conversation. Practical ideas, trusted voices and examples of positive action reach listeners across Tana River County, encouraging other communities to learn, adapt and take action.

The station also gives local people a platform. Voices that might otherwise go unheard become a source of encouragement and inspiration for others. Residents are not simply the subjects of stories; they become contributors to change.

And the conversation doesn’t end when the programme finishes. Following the Hola Mission visits, Vox Radio hosted Assistant Chief Babwoya to discuss issues including youth radicalisation, online safety and community security. Through live discussions, call-ins, radio dramas and social media, the station creates opportunities for communities to share ideas, ask questions and explore solutions together.

Strengths Shared, Change Scaled

Strong communities are built on trust, relationships and communication.

Together, SALT and Vox Radio create a powerful partnership. SALT discovers the strengths already present in communities. Vox Radio amplifies them.

What begins as a conversation between neighbours can become a conversation across an entire county, helping local strengths travel further, inspire others and create lasting change.
