Humanitarian Radio (Palestine)
Amplifying Voices and partners, Rapid Response Radio and Transformational, are working with UNICEF to establish a humanitarian FM radio station in Palestine.
The Humanitarian Radio station fills the communication gaps that endanger lives of children and families in Gaza and in West Bank. It is dedicated to saving the lives of those made most vulnerable by conflict. At this time this means a focus on communities in Gaza. Around a 1/3 of daytime broadcasting will be aimed at children.
The radio station is a multi-agency platform hosted by UNICEF and working closely with a ‘communicating with communities’ working group, with a strong emphasis on community involvement and equipping local people as they work on rebuilding Gaza.

Amplifying Voices role
Working with our partners, Amplifying Voices provided a Backpack Studio for a Gaza production team and supported the installation of a transmitter and antenna system in West Bank that can reach all of Gaza and the southern part of West Bank.

Amplifying Voices is currently providing training and advice for two production teams; one based in Gaza and the other in West Bank. The production teams bring together content from several humanitarian providers, while also creating their own trauma-aware content with a focus on bringing in community voices, while observing humanitarian principles of neutrality and “do no harm”.
This station is operating in an incredibly sensitive environment where trust in humanitarian providers has been eroded, sometimes deliberately by misinformation campaigns, and in other cases through their apparent absence when banned from operating during the conflict. To prevent further harm to humanitarian activities, or to listeners participating in programmes, all content has to be pre-recorded. Amplifying Voices is also advising the radio station’s Governance Board so they can balance between responsible radio broadcasting oversight and the flexibility needed for a lively, interesting, engaging, relevant and responsive radio station. The Governance Board consists of a UNICEF Focal Point and representatives of key humanitarian stakeholders, including representation from Palestinian NGOs.
